Joe Auer's memorable kickoff return

Here's a story I wrote for Sports Collectors Daily. On Sept. 2, 1966, Joe Auer took the opening kickoff for the Miami Dolphins, the first play in regular-season history for the fledgling AFL franchise. Auer returned the kick 95 yards for a touchdown -- 15 seconds into their existence, the Dolphins were leading the Oakland Raiders. Oakland won that game 23-14, and the Dolphins would go 3-11. But that first play was electrifying. Here is a look back, plus a look at a very rare football set -- the 1967 Miami Dolphins Royal Castle set. If you lived in South Florida during the 1960s and '70s, you remember Royal Castle. Tiny burgers, but oh, so good.
